Troubled Sarasota Nursing Home Finally Shut Down

In a recent blog
I discussed the problems plaguing Sarasota based Harmony Healthcare. I questioned why the facility was still open after several years of documented
nursing home neglect
. It seems regulators have finally determined that the nursing home does patients more harm than good and are shutting it down.
ABC Action News
reported Federal regulators have stepped in and are giving the nursing home until September 22 when it will close its doors. Conditions have changed since a court-appointed manager took over the facility, but there are still enough problems to be concerning. Missing medications are the newest of the reported issues and could lead to a patient
not receiving medical care in a nursing home
. The 83 residents of Harmony Healthcare must find a new place to live before September 22. State officials are assisting them with relocation.
The question remains why did it take so long for the state and federal governments to step in and address the violations at Harmony Healthcare? A resident died almost three years ago due to severe nursing home neglect
. Inspections after her death revealed improper nutrition and failing
pressure-sore prevention
used in the home. But the facility has remained open until now putting residents at risk. As a Sarasota nursing home attorney
, the length of the response time troubles me.
