About Pressure Sores

Pressure sores, also called bed sores or pressure ulcers, can occur when an elderly individual with limited mobility is not being properly cared for. When the individual is unable to turn himself or herself regularly or move regularly, these sores or ulcers can show up on the skin.  In a bed-ridden individual, these sores generally appear on areas in which the skin covers a bony part of the body, such as the heels, back of the head, shoulders, hips, lower back, ankles or buttocks. 

Depending upon the severity of the pressure sore, the individual could simply have red patches of skin, or could show severe, infected wounds requiring extensive medical treatment. Position changes in either the bed or wheelchair are extremely important to avoid pressure ulcers - if the patient is not assisted in position changes regularly (as frequent as every 15 minutes in a wheelchair, or every 2 hours in a bed), the elderly patient could suffer from these wounds.
